SIMON RAAB: THE SUN DOES SET
|
|
15 - 29 June, 2010
At 32 Dover Street, London W1S 4NE
In association with Galerie Peter Zimmermann, Mannheim
Join us from 6–8pm, Tuesday 15th, June for the private view.
Simon Raab blurs the border that separates painting from sculpture. The paintings are lively hybrids that push the notion of impasto to radical extremes: a kind of armoured impasto. Or perhaps they are polychromatic reliefs that shimmer and change with every step we take. This is Raab’s first solo exhibition in London. His practise is based in San Francisco, California.

FRED AT ART BRUSSELS 2010: BOOTH 3A-27
|
|
FRED is proud to announce our participation in ART BRUSSELS 2010, 23rd-26th April: Stand 3A-27 The focus of our stand is major works by four of our gallery artists: Zanele Muholi, Athi-Patra Ruga, Dan Coombs and Caron Geary.
Zanele Muholi was born in Durban in 1972. Her first solo exhibition was in Johannesburg in 2004 and she has since exhibited throughout the world. Muholi challenges the history of the way that black women’s bodies are both seen and perceived. Along with other prestigious international artists she has just been selected to exhibit at the 29th São Paulo Biennial 2010. She will be showing at FRED London 24 June – 31 July, 2010.
Athi-Patra Ruga was born in Umtata, South Africa, in 1984. His work has been included in “Beauty and Pleasure in Contemporary South African Art”, at Stenersen Museum, Oslo, and Guangzhou Trienalle, China, in 2008; and “Pret-a-Pratager”, at the IFA Gallery, Stuttgart. He was also represented in “Younger than Jesus”, a directory of over 500 of the world’s best artists under the age of 33, published by Phaidon.
Dan Coombs, a much-loved British artist, has work included in major international public and private collections. From the beginning of his career, Coombs has received acclaim for his practice. His layered compositions of aesthetic gestalt incorporate found objects and collaged elements into painterly formats that pulled the image into the physical space of the viewer.
Caron Geary’s multi-faceted practise has seen her seemingly live several lives instead of one. Performer, musician, photographer and artist, her work is uncompromisingly confrontational. Having exhibited throughout Europe and America and alongside Cindy Sherman and Matthew Barney, she has gained serious recognition for her talent. Geary will be performing at the opening for ART BRUSSELS at Wiels. Acts start at 11.30pm.

TRAJECTOR ART FAIR, BLOOM! HOTEL
|
|
We are also attending TRAJECTOR Art Fair, ROOM 105 which will transform Hotel Bloom! into a vibrant ‘boutique hotel art fair’ providing a platform for a range of international art spaces and curators to present some of the best emerging contemporary art to a Brussels audience.
FRED London is showing New York based polymath, GUY RICHARD SMIT. A man of many talents, whose artistic activities include painting in oil, acrylic, watercolour and creating complex narrative video work. This solo presentation of Smit’s videos, paintings and drawings is essentially a meditation on cliché and black comedy. The videos begin simply as humorously absurd conceits, but through time and repetition become a sort of dreamy contemplation on power, desire and failure.
We hope to see you at both ART BRUSSELS and TRAJECTOR.

FRED AT PULSE MIAMI ART FAIR, DEC 2009
|
|
BOOTH F-202
On the occasion of our participation at PULSE MIAMI ART FAIR this year from DECEMBER 03-06, Fred [London] Limited is delighted to announce a new and exciting direction from 2010!
During a long period of research we have been looking at work by African artists, African-American artists, and artists of African descent based in Europe. In particular, we have examined the socio-political issues facing these artists in post-colonial and western immigrant sub-cultures - including those of race, gender and sexuality. It is our belief that some of the most interesting work being made today comes from such artists; many of who have not previously exhibited in the UK. Working within a framework of race-based dynamics and differences, these artists explore notions of categorisation in their work - be it the idea of identity, nationhood, ethnicity, sexuality, religion and belonging.
At PULSE ART FAIR in Miami this December we will preview our 2010 programme with a group of significant work by artists of and from the African Diaspora. On this occasion, and ahead of a series of major monograph shows, we are delighted to announce representation of:
NINA CHANEL ABNEY (USA)
ZANELE MUHOLI (South Africa)
CONRAD BOTES (South Africa)
GODFRIED DONKOR (Ghana/UK)
Please see the "Exhibitions" page for more information or contact Robin Page at robin@fred-london.com

MARK FAIRNINGTON- DARWIN'S CANOPY
|
|
Mark Fairnington has been selected to participate in DARWIN'S CANOPY at the Natural History Museum in London.
The project has been initiated by the Museum to mark the Bicentenary of Charles Darwin. The aim is to create a fitting rehabilitation of ceiling panels in the ‘inner sanctum’ of Richard Owen’s and Alfred Waterhouse’s great ‘Cathedral to Creation’ – The Natural History Museum in South Kensington.
The new work for the ceiling will be selected though an invited competition to a small number of leading artists and designers. They will have the opportunity to work with the Museum to develop their ideas. One of these proposals will be selected through the competition process, which includes a public view, and finally commissioned on the ceiling. This will be a landmark project where one leading contemporary artist will have the opportunity to make their contribution to the living heritage of this great Grade I listed building. The work will be a fusion of great art, and architecture that expresses the ongoing importance of one of the greatest and most influential ideas in science and society. The finished work will be opened on February 12th 2009.
The other short listed artists are Christine Boreland, Dorothy Cross, Alison Turnbull, United Visual Artists, Mark Wallinger, Richard Wentworth, Rachael Whiteread and Richard Woods.
The proposals can be seen at the museum until September 14th.
